A shocking result developed at the ICC Cricket World 2023 as Afghanistan caused the first upset of the competition defeating England by 69 runs. England won the toss and put Afghanistan to bat first. Despite a strong start provided by Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80), Afghanistan faultered in the middle and struggled their way to 284. Chasing it. England were off to a poor start and they never broke the stranglehold of the Afghan spinners who kept chipping in with regular wickets. Harry Brook (66) was the only one who could show some fight.  Mujeeb ur Rahman (3/51) and Rashid Khan (3/37) were the pick of the Afghan bowlers.
