YouTuber Ishan Sharma sparked an online debate after calling the US tipping culture a scam in his latest post. In his now viral post, Ishan states that he recently went to a restaurant and ordered a crepe, club sandwich and a panini, which amounted to USD 45 (INR 3800). According to his claims, Ishan paid the waitress USD 50 in cash and expected the balance to be returned. However, upon realising that the amount was not going to be returned, he mentions that he asked for it but was met with a ‘you have to pay the tip,’ response. He adds that even though he asked her if it was mandatory to collect the tip, the waitress simply ignored him and walked away. His post sparked a debate online, with some criticising his opinion while others sympathising with him. Ishan Sharma Calls US Tipping Culture a Scam
Tipping is such a scam in New York!💀
Why do I pay extra just because restaurants pay minimum hourly wages?
Ordered a crepe, club sandwich and Panini for $45(Rs. 3800).
We paid $50 cash and the waiter just took the rest as tip.
I asked for change and she said "you have to pay… pic.twitter.com/9ggEZHIoft

Tips Should Be Given
I don’t know about America;
but shouldn’t tips be given as a way of saying thank you but as a compulsion.

This Is Sad To See
Pretty sad to see young, educated and high earning Indians continue to drive this low abundance mindset behavior

This Is Custom!
15-20% tip is a customary social custom in the USA. When in Rome do as a Romans do.
If you strongly feel that tipping is wrong then don't order food at a sit down restaurant.

Really?
You wanted change on an 11% tip?

This Is the Norm
You got away easy with only 10% as a tip. These days it's become a norm to tip at least 15-20% or more.

It's Understandable!
Bhai for $50 on a $48 bill , it’s understandable for it to be considered tip. I am amazed that you asked $2 back. ☹️
