Vidya Balan took to social media to pay a tribute to iconic Indian Carnatic signer and Bharat Ratna recipient MS Subbulakshmi on her 108th birth anniversary. In the now viral photos, the actress is styled exactly as MS Subbulakshmi, including the sarees she wore, the jewellery and her tanpura. In her post, Vidya mentions that she is honoured to be able to pay tribute to the iconic MS Amma, who was given the titles of ‘Queen of Music’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and ‘Nightingale of India’ by Sarojini Naidu. MS Subbulakshmi’s simple yet distinctive style set her apart from the rest. Vidya adds that for the tribute she wore four vibrant and unique sarees popularised by MS Subbulakshmi Amma in the 1960s and 1980s, and they feature her concert persona. The other half of the look features the traditional kumkumam and Vibhuti she wore on her forehead, the two nose pins on either side, the mallipoo (jasmine flowers) and the kondai (hair bun). In her tribute, Vidya perfectly channels the essence of MS Subbulakshmi Amma. Vidya Balan’s Heartfelt Praise for Jackie Shroff’s Thoughtful Gift; Calls It ‘Too Cool’.
