Hikers at the Blue Hills Reservation in Boston were startled to witness a dramatic scene on July 30 when they were stopped at their trail when they spotted two timber rattlesnakes seemingly engaged in an intense "fight." The incident, captured and shared on X, sparked speculation with a user suggesting that the snakes were, in fact, participating in a mating ritual. Timber rattlesnakes, native to Massachusetts and classified as endangered, are now limited to small populations in Greater Boston, the Connecticut River Valley, and Berkshire County. MassWildlife notes that while rattlesnakes are generally non-aggressive, they will defend themselves if threatened.
