Another day, another sickening trend online that only deepens the gruesome reality that we otherwise face regularly. An X user, Janhavi Jain, shared her experience of eve teasing, accusing a group of Indian men who called her out while she was on a beach in Spain. "Just got called Desi maal on a beach in Spain, by a bunch of indian men. If indian men can make us feel uncomfortable even in Spain, imagine being a woman in India," she wrote on X. In another post, she added, "Also left a club because of men." Instead of empathising with her, social media users decided to mock her. A sick trend began appearing on X timelines, with women and men sharing fake stories of eve teasing to shame Indian men and women. The trend involves a replica of the original tweet shared by Janhavi, with a different city, both abroad and in India, followed by a series of mockery. The incident remains unverified, but should mockery be the response? She has deleted the tweet and made her X account private. It is important to note that this comes amid the nation's rally demanding justice for RG Kar Hospital's rape and murder case in Kolkata. These trends only divert the attention from real issues and problems that women face on a regular basis.
