Sonam Wangchuk, the Indian engineer and education reformist from Ladakh, expressed his profound gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the creation of five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh. In a video posted on his X account on August 26, the Ramon Magsaysay Award-winner also expressed his concern regarding the need for clarification on whether these new districts would be given the status of Autonomous District Councils under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The five newly created districts of Ladakh are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang. Sonam Wangchuk added in his video that the people of Ladakh sought not just new administrative districts, but districts with democratic autonomy to decide on the progress of the region with proper local representation. Wangchuk added that the people of Ladakh were eager to receive the Sixth Schedule status ever since the region was made into a union territory in 2019. He further added that if these new districts were not Autonomous Districts, then the struggle of the people for the same would continue. Sonam Wangchuk Ends 21-Day Hunger Strike in Ladakh.
