Sushil Kumar Shinde, a veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister, announced his retirement from active politics on Tuesday. He declared that his daughter, Praniti Shinde, would be his successor in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and would contest from the Solapur Lok Sabha constituency. Having entered politics in the early seventies, he served as an MP for three terms. Shinde was Maharashtra's chief minister for a brief period during January 2003 and November 2004. Meanwhile, his heir, 42-year-old Praniti Shinde, has served as a legislator in the Solapur city central assembly seat for three consecutive terms.
