The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Women's Reservation Bill, which seeks to provide 33 percent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies, unanimously. 454 Lok Sabha MPs voted in favour of ‘The Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ bill, and two voted against it. If reports are to be believed, the two MPs who voted against the Women's Reservation Bill are from AIMIM. A report by Hindustan said Asaduddin Owaisi and Imtiaz Jaleel might have voted against the bill as AIMIM declared its stance during the debate. Owaisi argued the bill would only facilitate Savarna women's participation. "I oppose this legislation.... The justification that is being given for the bill is that more women will get elected to Parliament. If that is the justification, why that justification is not being extended to the OBC and Muslim women whose representation in this august House is minimal," Owaisi said. Women’s Reservation Bill Passed in Lok Sabha: Legislation Granting 33% Seats to Women in Lower House and State Assemblies Cleared in LS.
