In response to the recent rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the West Bengal government has announced a series of stringent measures aimed at improving the safety of women across the state. Key initiatives include limiting the working hours for women doctors to a maximum of 12 hours, with efforts to minimize night duties. Comprehensive security checks, including breathalyzer tests, will be conducted at all medical institutions, from superspeciality hospitals to district hospitals. The government has mandated the establishment of separate restrooms with attached toilets for women and the deployment of female volunteers, under the force named "Ratrir Sathi," to monitor safety during night shifts. These safe rooms will be under constant CCTV surveillance. A special mobile app with an alarm system will be introduced, linking directly to local police stations, and a 112 emergency helpline will be established for panic situations. Security checks will be made mandatory in all institutions. Additionally, the government has directed all organisations to establish Vishaka Committees for addressing sexual harassment if they have not done so already. There will be district-wide programs focused on women’s safety, and increased night police patrols around women’s colleges, hospitals, and hostels. To further bolster security, the government has mandated that all staff and faculty wear identity cards and that security guards at institutions include both male and female personnel. Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Takes Out Rally Demanding Capital Punishment for Accused (Watch Video).
