Tensions flared in Bareilly on August 2 when villagers vandalised the home of Saddam, a man who had eloped with a 21-year-old woman on July 28 after their families disapproved of their interfaith relationship. Following the couple's disappearance, the woman’s family filed a missing person's report. The woman later released a video announcing their planned marriage on August 1, leading to their trace and return by police. While the woman was returned to her family, Saddam was arrested. Late on August 2, villagers vandalised Saddam's house and set a vehicle on fire. Police swiftly intervened to extinguish the flames and restore order.
