On May 19, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by four youngsters while she was going home from attending Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamegh Ghat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. After a video of the heinous act went viral, the girl's relatives found out about her trauma. "The young girl retaliated to their remarks after which the accused allegedly gang-raped the victim", said Santosh Kumar Singh, assistant commissioner of police (HQ and crime), Varanasi, adding that all four of the case's defendants had been taken into custody.
