Dr Dinesh Sharma, former deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, was announced by the BJP on Sunday as its contender in the state's by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat. The death of the sitting MP, Hardwar Dubey, caused the by-election, which is set to take place on September 15. The seat is vacant until November 2026. Sharma's victory is quite guaranteed because the BJP holds a commanding majority in the state assembly.
