Central Railway is set to demolish the deteriorating Sion railway overbridge (ROB) starting August 1, 2024. The project, lasting until July 31, 2026, will necessitate extensive traffic diversions, as announced by the traffic police. Heavy vehicles have already been barred from the Sion ROB, allowing only light motor vehicles in recent months. With demolition commencing, all vehicular traffic from Dr. BA Road towards LBS Marg or Saint Rohidas Road will be rerouted. Southbound vehicles on Dr. BA Road will be redirected through Sion Hospital junction and Sulochana Shetty Road. Traffic heading towards Kurla and Dharavi will navigate via KK Krishnan Menan Road and St. Rohidas Marg. Commuters bound for the Western Express Highway and Bandra will detour through Sion-Mahim Link Road and Kalanagar Junction. Eastbound light vehicles from Kurla will use Saint Rohidas Road and KK Krishnan Menan Marg, while heavy vehicles will be rerouted through Dharavi Depot Road and Sion Bandra Link Road. A no-parking rule has been implemented on several key roads, including the Sion-Mahim Link Road and Sulochana Shetty Road, to alleviate congestion. Officials anticipate short-term inconvenience but emphasise the long-term benefits of a modernised bridge.
