The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today, July 1, said that the total value of INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation, which was INR 3.56 lakh crores at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of INR 2,000 currency was announced, has declined to INR 7581 crores at the close of business on June 28. The RBI also said that 97.87 per cent of the INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been returned. The central bank also stated that INR 2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender. It must be noted that last year, on May 19, the RBI announced the withdrawal of INR 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation.
