Protest erupted in Ratnagiri on August 26 after a 19-year-old trainee nurse was drugged and raped by an auto-rickshaw driver. The incident occurred when the survivor boarded the auto to go home and was offered water laced with sedatives by the driver. After she lost consciousness, he took her to a secluded location and raped her before fleeing from the scene. The case came to light when the survivor was found unconscious by some people in the morning, who reported it to the police. The police promptly admitted the girl to a nearby government hospital and identified her using the document found with her. After she regained consciousness the survivor narrated the ordeal to her parents and police who then filed a case of sexual assault. The survivor is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Police are actively searching for the perpetrator using CCTV footage from the auto-rickshaw.
