Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati defended Lok Sabha LoP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after controversy erupted over his debut speech in the first session of the Parliament. When asked about the controversy, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati said, "When someone told me about Rahul Gandhi's "Hindus are violent" remark, I went and watched the entire speech. Gandhi said nothing against Hindu Dharma. He only said that violence has no place in the Hindu religion, which is true." Shankaracharya also called for the prosecution of those who shared the select part of Gandhi's speech. In his maiden speech as LoP in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said, "Those who call themselves Hindu keep talking about violence, hate, and falsehood 24 hours a day". The speech saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi rising from his seat and saying, "This is a very serious issue. Calling the entire Hindu society violent is a serious issue (poor Hindu samaj ko think kehna yeh gambhir vishay hai).” 'Aap Hindu Ho Hi Nahi': Rahul Gandhi Slams BJP-NDA Government Over Religious Violence, Says Those Indulge in Violence Cannot Be Hindu (Watch Video).
