The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Pune's ghat regions, with the city and its plains under an orange alert. Since Friday evening, Pune and its surrounding areas have experienced heavy to intense rain, especially in the ghats. The continuous downpour has led to the near-full capacity of all district dams, prompting the irrigation department to release water. Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has urged district authorities to prepare on a war footing to prevent loss and inconvenience. The release of water from dams such as Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, Pavana, Mulshi, and Bhatghar has raised river water levels, increasing the flood risk in low-lying areas. Residents in areas like Baner, Sinhagad Road, Warje, Dandekarpul, and Patil Estate Slums are at heightened risk and have been advised to take necessary precautions. Similarly, in Pimpri-Chinchwad, residents of Pimple Gurav, Sanghvi, Dapodi, and Harris Bridge face potential flooding. Encroached natural streams in various city parts could also lead to waterlogging. Authorities are on high alert, urging citizens to exercise caution when venturing out. Pune Rains: Heavy Downpour Causes Indrayani River To Overflow, Washing Away Large Container (Watch Video).
