On Friday, September 13, the Kerala High Court reduced the death sentence of a murder convict to life imprisonment. The accused was sentenced to death by the trial court for causing the death of the 4-year-old daughter of his partner in 2013. During the hearing of the case, the division bench of Justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice Syam Kumar VM found that there was no intention to murder the child and thus altered the conviction from murder to culpable homicide. Besides the accused, the high court also altered the conviction of two other convicts from murder to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The deceased girl was allegedly found dead in a six-feet-deep pit on October 30 in 2013. HC on Child Marriage: Ban on Child Marriage Applies to All Religions; Overrides Muslim Personal Law, Says Kerala High Court.
