As the festive season approaches, with Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan just around the corner, the tradition of kite flying is set to take centre stage in Delhi-NCR. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) operates a network of nearly 400 kilometres across the region, much of it elevated. The 25,000-volt live Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires that power the trains run alongside these tracks, creating a potential hazard as kite-flying activity increases around August 15. There is a heightened chance of kite strings getting caught in the OHE wires or becoming entangled in the pantograph, the device that draws power from the OHE. Such incidents can disrupt Metro services by damaging or tripping the OHE or pantograph. Additionally, using metallic maanjha (kite string) can be life-threatening. To mitigate these risks, the DMRC has implemented a robust system to monitor and prevent disruptions. The corporation urges the public to exercise caution and avoid flying kites near Metro tracks to ensure a safe and uninterrupted festive season. Independence Day 2024: CISF To Intensify Security Checks at Delhi Metro Stations Ahead of I-Day.
