A Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling recently stated that a teacher with good intentions who uses strict language to discipline children could not be held accountable for the suicide of a hypersensitive student who goes to extreme lengths to get what they want after blaming the teacher. The statement was made by Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi after the dismissal of a maths teacher who had been charged with encouraging a Class X pupil to commit suicide by treating her harshly. However, the court noted that things would have been different if there was proof that the teacher had severely mistreated the student. In this instance, the Court determined that there was evidence to suggest the deceased student was weak in studies, and her reprimands were solely related to this. HC on Suicide: Mere Mention of Individual's Name in Suicide Note Can't Be Sole Basis of Trial for Abetment of Suicide, Says Delhi High Court.
