The Karnataka High Court noted on Monday, April 22, that although the State's prohibition on hookahs in Karnataka is upheld, there is a widespread misperception that smoking a hookah is less harmful than smoking cigarettes. While cigarettes are strictly regulated worldwide, Justice M Nagaprasanna expressed worry about hookahs being 'let loose'. The Court further stated that as hookah is typically smoked in groups and the same hookah instrument is passed around, there is an increased risk of contracting herpes and hepatitis. The Court also pointed out that hookahs do not come with statutory warnings about health dangers, although cigarette packets and alcohol do.
