HC on ChatGPT Use in Legal Matters: AI Cannot Substitute Either Human Intelligence or Humane Element in Adjudicatory Process, Responses From AI Chatbots Can't Decide Issues, Says Delhi High Court
The Court made these conclusions while addressing a lawsuit brought by Christian Louboutin, a French footwear and accessory brand well-known for its red sole and spiked shoe designs.
According to a recent ruling by the Delhi High Court, answers provided by artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like ChatGPT cannot serve as the foundation for resolving legal or factual disputes in a court of law.
According to Justice Prathiba M. Singh, ChatGPT is, at most, a tool that may be used for a preliminary understanding or for preliminary study and is not a replacement for human intellect or the humane aspect in the adjudicatory process. The Court made these conclusions while addressing a lawsuit brought by Christian Louboutin, a French footwear and accessory brand well-known for its red sole and spiked shoe designs. It claimed that a company going under the name of "The Shoe Boutique - Shutiq" was producing shoes with the exact same design in numerous Indian towns. Christian Louboutin's attorney Pravin Anand testified that a ChatGPT inquiry can potentially be used to assess the plaintiffs' reputation.
