The Punjab & Haryana High Court recently imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on a live-in couple for requesting police protection in the absence of a clear threat to their life or freedom. During an earlier hearing of the case, Justice Alok Jain had made it clear that the petitioners would be responsible for the expenses of 50,000 if the State found that there was no perceived threat to them. The first petitioner, a married lady, was requesting protection on behalf of the second petitioner, an unmarried person, who she was living with.
