Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, was acquitted in the Ranjit Singh murder case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, May 28. Previously sentenced to life imprisonment by a CBI Court in Panchkula in 2021, along with four other accused, for conspiracy to murder the former Dera manager in 2002, Ram Rahim successfully appealed against his conviction. The court allowed his appeal against conviction under various sections of the IPC, citing lack of evidence. The murder was allegedly motivated by Ram Rahim's suspicion that Singh was behind the circulation of an anonymous letter exposing sexual exploitation within the Dera. Despite his acquittal, Ram Rahim is currently serving a 20-year jail term for rape and a life sentence for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
