For students at the Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School in Adilabad in Telangana, the existence of a ghost in their Class 5 room was a terrifying reality. This belief was shattered when a new teacher, Nuthal Ravindar, spent a night in the supposedly haunted room and emerged unscathed the next morning. The myth began to unravel last week when Ravindar, a rationalist and general secretary of Jana Vignana Vedika, joined the school. While teaching Class 7, a tree fell outside, causing the students to tremble with fear. Curious about their reaction, Ravindar inquired and learned about their belief in a ghost haunting the Class 5 room. Despite his attempts to reassure them, the students remained convinced, citing strange noises from the empty classroom as evidence of the ghost’s presence. Determined to prove them wrong, Ravindar offered to sleep in the Class 5 room. The students insisted he do so on July 5, the night of Amavasya. Ravindar agreed on one condition: the arrangement had to remain a secret between him and the students. The next morning, Ravindar emerged from the classroom unharmed, dispelling the students’ fears and debunking the ghost myth.
