Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim ignited a major controversy by urging people to convert to Islam, stating that non-Muslims are unfortunate and need to embrace Islam to make Allah happy. Hakim, a TMC leader and close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, made these remarks during the 'All India Quran Competition' on July 3 at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata. "Those who are not born in Islam are unfortunate! They are born with misfortune. We have to bring them under the fold of Islam," Hakim declared. "We need to spread Islam among non-Muslims. If we can bring someone on the path of Islam, then we will prove to be true Muslims," he added. The comments drew sharp criticism, particularly from the BJP. Amit Malviya, head of BJP's IT cell, condemned the remarks, accusing the TMC of engaging in extreme appeasement politics. "The TMC’s penchant for extreme appeasement politics in West Bengal is an open secret," Malviya wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He further criticised the TMC for recent incidents, including a video showing a TMC leader assaulting a man and a woman, likening it to Sharia Court punishment. Malviya argued that these actions reveal the TMC’s underlying agenda and have sparked a political storm in the state.
