In a heated exchange during the Supreme Court hearing of NEET-UG-related petitions on Tuesday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reprimanded senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara for interrupting the proceedings. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media. The incident occurred when Nedumpara interrupted senior advocate Narender Hooda, who was presenting arguments on behalf of one of the petitioners. Despite being asked to wait until Hooda finished, Nedumpara insisted, “I have something to say,” and later asserted, “I am the seniormost here.” Chief Justice Chandrachud, visibly irked, responded sternly, “I am warning you. You will not speak to the gallery. I am in charge of the court. Call the security… have him removed.” He further emphasized, “You do not have to say that. You can leave. I have seen the judiciary for the last 24 years. I cannot let lawyers dictate procedure in this court.” Nedumpara countered, “I have seen it since 1979,” prompting the Chief Justice to warn that he might have to issue a directive if the behaviour continued. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the National Testing Agency (NTA), also criticised Nedumpara’s conduct, labelling it “contemptuous.” NEET-UG Exam 2024: ‘No Material To Show Systemic Breach’, Says Supreme Court, Refuses to Order Re-Test.
