The Tambaram police, on August 31, conducted a massive raid with around 1,000 police officers at the Abode Valley housing society occupied chiefly by students of Sri Ramaswamy Memorial Institute of Science and Technology (SRM University) at Chennai's Kattankulathur. Following the five-hour-long search headed by Tambaram Additional Commissioner of Police, C Mageshwari, 10 people including nine college students were arrested for smuggling marijuana or "ganja" and other banned contraband. The police team, which included 500 women personnel as well from the Armed Reserve wing, were all tasked with checking for hidden drugs and banned tobacco products. The police recovered around 500 gm of ganja, six ganja chocolates, 20 ml of ganja oil, five bhang packets, one smoking pot, seven hookah machines and six kgs of shisha or hookah powder, as reported. Two people, Mahesh Kumar and Sunil Kumar, had allegedly procured ganja chocolates from Bangalore and were involved in their sale. It was reported that the raid was conducted based on a specific tip concerning the growing substance abuse among students in the college's vicinity.
