The Manipur High Court recently stated that it used ChatGPT for research in a service matter. The high court bench of Justice A Guneshwar Sharma said that he used the artificial intelligence (AI) tool to help him revoke the disengagement (removal from service) of a Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel. Initially, the court sought to know from the government counsel under what circumstances the authorities could order such disengagement. When the court received no response, the judge resorted to Google and ChatGPT to find the answer. "In these circumstances, this Court is compelled to do extra research through Google and ChatGPT 3.5 and collected some important information," the judge recorded in the order. After speaking about its research, the court said that the disengagement order was in violation of the principles of natural justice and hence ordered the reinstatement of the petitioner with immediate effect.
