In a significant update, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has revised the National Highways Fee Rules, as mentioned in the notification issued on September 9. The new regulations, known as the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024, introduce a zero-fee policy for the first 20km of travel on national highways. Vehicles equipped with a functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) On-Board Unit will benefit from this provision, with fees applicable only for distances beyond this initial threshold. Furthermore, a dedicated lane for GNSS-equipped vehicles will be introduced, with a doubled fee imposed on those without proper equipment using these lanes. The updated rules aim to streamline toll collection and encourage the adoption of GNSS technology. The changes will be enforced upon publication in the Official Gazette.
