The parents of Captain Anshuman Singh, who died in the July 2023 Siachen fire, have called for a revision of the next of kin (NOK) criteria for disbursing pensionary and other entitlements. Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh claim their daughter-in-law, Smriti Singh, left their home without informing them and now receives most entitlements after their son's death. They argue the current NOK system is outdated and unfair and called for Rahul Gandhi to address this pressing issue “When the NOK system was made, there was hatred for daughters-in-law. The scenario has completely changed today,” Ravi Pratap Singh said. He emphasised that while siblings and spouses might heal, parents' grief only deepens over time. Captain Anshuman Singh, posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, was a Regimental Medical Officer with the 26th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. He died in a fire at the Siachen Glacier on July 19, 2023, just five months after his marriage. Captain Anshuman Singh’s Father and Mother Seek Revision of NOK Criteria, Say Their Daughter-in-Law Smriti Singh No More Stays With Family (Watch Video).
