The auto and taxi driver unions in the Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) region have gone on a strike for two days from August 22-23. The strike has been called in protest against app-based cab services. The Auto-Taxi Strike has been organised by over 15 regional unions, as they blame the central and state governments for allegedly failing to provide adequate compensation despite raising multiple complaints over the years. Kishan Verma, President of Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union told IANS, "Employment for auto and taxi drivers, which is being affected or taken away, must be addressed. Private Ola and Uber taxis are involved in smuggling, and there is also trade in alcohol and drugs. To address these issues, we are going on strike." The Auto-Taxi Strike was arranged to address the issues of underpayment and inability to work and pay EMIs of vehicles by the local auto and taxi drivers, who are burdened with taxes and competition from private players. ‘Paani Satyagraha’ on Delhi Water Crisis: Atishi Begins Indefinite Hunger Strike for More Water From Haryana (Watch Video).
