An unfortunate incident occurred recently after Sewell Setzer III, a 14-year-old boy from Florida, committed suicide after interacting with an AI chatbot. Character.AI, a platform offering personalised conversations to users, was the reason behind his tragic incident. Setzer slowly began to form an emotional connection with the chatbot, which he named after the popular Game of Thrones character, Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke). After reviewing his chat log, it was discovered that the ninth grader had developed feelings for the AI and referred to it as 'Dany' over the course of several months. Setzer often shared about his suicidal thoughts during their conversation. His mother, Megan L Garcia, has now filed a lawsuit claiming that the chatbot was the reason behind her son's death.
