Vairamuthu, Tamil Lyricist and Poet’s Literary Award Presented by Kerala’s ONV Cultural Academy to Be Re-examined
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is the Chief Patron of ONV Cultural Academy. The award this time was decided by a jury consisting of Prabha Varma, Malayalam University Vice-Chancellor Anil Vallathol and Alankode Leelakrishnan. The academy is headed by filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The Tamil poet-lyricist Vairamuthu has been chosen for the fifth ONV Literary Prize.
The decision to give the award, instituted in the name of Jnanpith-award-winning poet ONV Kurup, to the controversial lyricist, Vairamuthu was criticised massively by the industry. The poet has been accused of sexual harassment by around 17 women. The decision was made on the advice of the jury, said a statement released by the academy on May 28.
