Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, is set to make his debut in the film Maharaj. This historical drama, featuring Jaideep Ahlawat, centers on the compelling Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, a pivotal legal battle in Indian history. The film’s intriguing first-look poster, released on May 29, ignited curiosity about its plot. Originally scheduled for OTT platform release on June 14, the film’s debut has been delayed following a Gujarat High Court order on June 13 restraining Netflix from releasing it. The delay stems from objections raised by members of the Pushtimarg religious sect, devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya. They approached the court alleging that Maharaj is based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 and could potentially disrupt public order and provoke violence against their community and Hinduism at large. Based on concerns that the movie could offend religious sentiments, Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the Gujarat HC has restrained Netflix from releasing the film on June 14. The court has issued notices to relevant authorities, the film production company and Netflix, scheduling the next hearing for June 18.

But what exactly was the Maharaj Libel Case? Buckle up, history buffs, as we delve into this fascinating true story.

Who Is Junaid Khan Playing In Maharaj?

His fight extended beyond the confines of a printing press, encompassing critical social issues of the time. Widow remarriage, a practice considered taboo in 19th-century India, was one of the causes he championed.
