‘The Notebook’ Star Gena Rowlands Diagnosed With Alzheimer’s Disease; Son Nick Cassavetes Reveals She’s in ‘Full Dementia’

Gena Rowlands, 94 who played an Alzheimer's patient in her son's 2004 film The Notebook is in 'full dementia'. The actress played the older version of the character played by Rachel McAdams, as a woman with dementia.

Actress Genna Rowlands, who played a woman with dementia in The Notebook, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Her son Nick Cassavetes and the film's director revealed in a recent interview. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cassavetes revealed the sad news. He said, "I got my mom to play older Alli, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she's had Alzheimer's." Revealing that his mother is in "full dementia", Cassavetes said, "And it's so crazy - we lived it, she acted it, and now it's on us." Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia that affects 70% of the 55 million people with dementia globally.
