Actress Genna Rowlands, who played a woman with dementia in The Notebook, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Her son Nick Cassavetes and the film's director revealed in a recent interview. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cassavetes revealed the sad news. He said, "I got my mom to play older Alli, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she's had Alzheimer's." Revealing that his mother is in "full dementia", Cassavetes said, "And it's so crazy - we lived it, she acted it, and now it's on us." Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia that affects 70% of the 55 million people with dementia globally. The National Institute on Aging says it's a "combination of age-related changes in the brain, along with genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors."
