Meryl Streep, the renowned Hollywood actress, delivered a poignant speech at the United Nations on Monday (September 23), highlighting the stark contrast between the freedom enjoyed by female cats and Afghan women under Taliban rule. "Today in Kabul, a female cat has more freedom than a woman. A cat may go sit on her front stoop and feel the sun on her face. She may chase a squirrel into the park," she said. Since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, following the withdrawal of US-led forces, Afghan women and girls have faced a severe crackdown on their rights. The Taliban's oppressive regime has barred most girls from attending high school and women from pursuing higher education. The Oscar award-winning actress additionally urged the Sunni community nations to intervene on behalf of Afghan women and girls, as the Taliban claims to be a Sunni Islamist movement. Check out her speech below. ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’: PM Narendra Modi Reiterates India’s Commitment in Eradicating Poverty, Bridging Digital Divide During Address at UN Summit in New York (Watch Video).
