Karla Sofia Gascon Takes Legal Action Against French Far-Right Politician Over Transphobic Remark After Cannes 2024 Triumph
After Karla Sofia Gascon became the first transgender woman to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes last week, French far-right politician Marion Marechal attacked the actress with sexist comments on her win.
Spanish actor Karla Sofia Gascon has sued French politician Marion Marechal over an alleged sexist insult. Gascon won the award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival last week for her role as a transgender drug lord in Emilia Perez. Shortly after the actress' win, far-right French politician Marion Marechal took to social media to slam the actor and wrote, "It is, therefore, a man who receives in Cannes the best prize for best actress. The progress for the left wing is the erasing of women and mothers." On May 29, Gascon filed a legal complaint against Marechal alleging "sexist insult due to one's gender identity." If found guilty, the politician would face one year in prison and a €30,000 fine.
