Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia won the Golden Eye award for Best Documentary Film at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for her film A Night of Knowing Nothing. This year, her film All We Imagine as Light had its world premiere at Cannes and was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the international film festival. It is the first film from India to compete in the main competition at Cannes since Swaham in 1994, and Payal is the first Indian female filmmaker to achieve this milestone. Her film, featuring Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha as two nurses from Mumbai, has won hearts, with critics praising it as ‘a glorious film’. Take a look at some of the reviews below for All We Imagine as Light. Sister Midnight at Cannes 2024: All You Need to Know About Radhika Apte's 'Vampire' FIlm That Has Got Rave Reviews From Its Premiere.
Variety – Indian director Payal Kapadia's lovely sophomore feature illuminates the Cannes competition with its lambent tale of two Mumbai nurses bonding within a city of 20 million souls.
The Guardian – here is a freshness and emotional clarity in Payal Kapadia’s Cannes competition selection, an enriching humanity and gentleness which coexist with fervent, languorous eroticism and finally something epiphanic in the later scenes and mysterious final moments. This is a glorious film.
The Hollywood Reporter – All We Imagine as Light is about as far as you can get from the stylistics of Bollywood’s masala musicals, even if there is one short and memorable impromptu dance scene toward the end. And yet its story of women looking for love and happiness in a calamitous world brings to mind those popular Mumbai-set movies, in which heroines suffer plenty of heartbreak before things eventually work out.
Screen Daily – All We Imagine As Light delivers on all of that promise and more: art-house audiences should respond to the opportunity to follow this beautifully-shot, gentle story as it eventually follows its own intriguing mysticism.
