Move over Blue or white dress, pink or green shoes, the debate on the colour of tennis balls, because this peculiar thing has evolved and now it is audio notes, where people hear or see the same thing differently. The talks began after 20-year-old Instagram 'influencer' and YouTuber from Florida named Cloe Feldman shared an audio clip on social media asking her followers what they heard. Feldman took to Twitter with the audio clip saying, "What do you hear?! Yanny or Laurel" and the internet stood divided.
While many heard the computerized voice as saying Larry, some tweeted saying they heard Yanny. We asked a few of our colleagues and interestingly, just like the Twitterverse, half of them heard Laurel and the rest Yanny. And FYI, there are people who heard both Laurel and Yanny! The tweet has received over 57,000 likes, 25,000 retweets and more than 13,000 comments at the time of publishing this article.
Here is the audio clip shared by Cloe Feldman that went viral:

Here is a little explanation that may be useful, although we are not sure if that is the reason:
Okay once I sped it up I was able to hear Yanny but all I could hear was Laurel before. pic.twitter.com/4LQR2tnBun

The interest in the sound notes hiked so much that social media users started trending hashtags #TeamYanny and #TeamLaurel depending on what they heard. Soon linguists and researchers entered the debate with scientific explanations. It was said that as the audio frequency of both the words was the same, there was a high chance of them sounding alike. It also depends on the variations in how different people perceive sound and the frequencies they pick up. What do you hear? Do let us know in the comment section below.
