An audio clip of two seemingly dissimilar words “Yanny” or “Laurel” has been raging the internet driving the social media users insane as the meme goes viral. But the computerized clip turned into an insensitive humour when the U.S. Air Force joined the pop culture debate. Early on May 17 Thursday morning, the Air Force tweeted “The Taliban Forces in #Farah city #Afghanistan would much rather have heard #Yanny or #Laurel than the deafening #BRRRT they got courtesy of our #A10.” The tweet referred to a deadly Taliban attack on May 15 in Afghanistan that killed many people. Realising their crude statement late that night, they apologised and removed the earlier tweet.

The tweet also linked an Air Force Times story about the battle. Earlier this week, the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, backed by United States Air Force A-10 aircraft, led the violent attack against the Taliban in the city of Farah in Western Afghanistan reportedly killing over 30 people.

Soon the Air Force tweet went viral as it compared the seriousness of attacking with the popular debate over the audio clip of “Yanny” or “Laurel”. On May 17 at around 10:58 pm, the twitter handle of the air force tweeted to apologise on the poor comment and informed netizens that the earlier tweet has been removed by them.

U.S. Air force apologize for insensitive Yanny Laurel Tweet!

The original tweet was removed, and it was reported that the Air Force would address the matter internally. While some users praised the U.S. Air Force for deleting that tweet, others asked them not to apologise and termed it as ‘awesome tweet’. Not getting into the debate of what actually the audio clip sounded; linking it to a battle which is so dark with an internet meme is never funny.
