Hyderabad, November 7: Officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday conducted an inspection at Karachi Bakery after a customer claimed to have found worms in chocolates bought from the iconic outlet. Following the examination, the civic body seized the contaminated consignment and levied a fine of Rs 25,000 on owners of Karachi Bakery.

In a tweet, Donita Jose shared pictures of contaminated chocolates. "Happy wormy Diwali from @KarachiBakery. Found these worms in at least 4 chocolate pieces. They even move... Not sure how many batches are even impacted by this," she tweeted. Responding to the viral tweet, GHMC Commissioner Hari Chandana asked the food safety officials to raid the outlet. IKEA Hyderabad Store Served Biryani With a Worm! Restaurant Fined For Rs 15000.

Donia's friend Deepak Pinto, who received contaminated chocolates as Diwali gift, said the confectionaries were well within the expiry date. "My wife first noticed a white powdered substance on the sweets. We couldn’t really decide if the sweets were contaminated or not. In the second piece she took, there were worms wriggling out of it. We found worms in two more sweets and the remaining had a white powdered substance on top of it,” Pinto told TNM.

Later, sharing pictures of inspection at Karachi Bakery, Chandana tweeted, "Food inspectors are on the premises lifting samples. Penalties will be imposed based on noticed violation." Two months ago, a customer found a caterpillar in biryani served at Swedish giant IKEA in Hyderabad.

Following the incident, notices were issued to the restaurant manager and Haldirams, where the restaurant procures its food. IKEA was levied a fine of Rs 11,500.
