We all know individuals in our life who love eating spicy food. But to many the fun does not end here. These people for the sake of having fun or being cool attempts to mess with the wild peppers. Time and again, such shots have been proved to be insane as trying the chilli peppers have triggered serious repercussions! We are talking about people who are bold enough to mess with peppers (not the regular green chillies), the ones that make it into the headlines and continues to rule the world records. A New York based man participated in a hot pepper eating contest and ended up in Hospital.
The 34-year-old man who is still not identified, took part in a chilli pepper eating contest and took on to the hottest pepper in the world—Carolina Reaper. Soon after eating the pepper he developed pain in his neck that turned into a series of thunderclap headaches. Such headaches are severe one and the sufferer goes through unbearable pains which are sudden but lasts for a very short amount of time. The researchers from the Bassett Medical Centre, Cooperstown, New York wrote in their paper, “During the next few days, on at least two occasions and in retrospect he thought probably more often, he experienced brief intense thunderclap headaches lasting seconds.”
The Carolina Reaper is officially the world’s hottest chilli pepper. In 2017, the Guinness has recognized the Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper as it has grown hotter over its prior world record. Originally named as HP22B, the Carolina Reaper is said to be the cultivator of the Capsicum Chinense plant. It is red and gnarled, with a small pointed tail. Yes, the pepper has entered its name in the Guinness World Records dubbed as the hottest chilli in the world.
And like we said, strangely enough, this New York based is not alone! In 2016, a 47-year-old American man ate a burger smothered in ghost pepper aka Bhut jolokia. In no time, he started vomiting violently and had to be hospitalized. The doctors discovered a 2.5 cm hole in his throat. According to the Journal of Emergency Medicine, the man was given a tube to aid his breathing for 14 days as he recovered.
Just like the Carolina Reaper and Ghost Pepper, there are more hottest chillies such as Pepper X and Dragon’s Breath. Being a fan of spicy food is good, but it is best to leave the record-breaking ones alone!
