The social media is a very unpredictable place to be in. One can never guess what might work, what might get viral or what might offend. But currently, if there is one thing that has unified everyone in the country is Malayali actress Priya Prakash Varrier. One video clip from her debut song was enough for her to become famous overnight. She has become a star in the social media before her debut film even releases. Humorously tagged the ‘national crush’ currently, it is a thing to ponder about how the virality of such things works on these platforms. With the ability to share something with a much wider audience on just one click, things spread faster than wildfires here. But this is not the first time we are seeing such an epidemic like fascination. Let’s do a little recap into other ordinary people who became famous overnight thanks to the very same medium- social media!
The tea-seller from Pakistan, Arshad Khan, became so famous as a blue-eyed boy that he landed up as a model. One picture of him pouring tea had girls swooning over his looks. He too became a trend and found fame. Such fame that landed him a movie. But well, what do we know about him now? What movie is this? Has it released?
Remember that girl from Symbiosis Design Institute? Let us brush up your memory. The one in a selfie taken by Shah Rukh Khan while he was promoting Raees. She did not even ask for any such attention but the internet had worked its charm. Her name is Saima Hussain Mir who had to face the downside of this viral sensation. Websites started their research and gave all her information out in the race of giving ‘news.’ And then Saima was literally harassed online to the point that she deleted her Facebook account. No one is talking about her now.
A pretty face takes no time, the profession doesn’t matter. So a vegetable seller named Kusum Shrestha from Nepal too shot to instant fame. She started trending as #sabziwali and had admiration coming her way from everywhere. Who knew her just helping her parents in her holidays would get her trending in a world away? Again, she is not a person we talk off anymore.
The reason to cite these examples is how they have enjoyed their short-lived fame. Such is social media, while it gives you instant fame it is also for a very limited time until there is a new muse to haul over. All this fame, corresponding to memes and becoming a butt of jokes and then becoming dusted is what the lifespan of a viral sensation looks like. In comparison, Priya Prakash Varrier does have her movie Oru Adaar Love releasing. So there are chances she might bag more ads and movies. But then an overdose of something can also result in quick ignorance. We hope she does not meet the same short-lived fame as these common personalities.
