Mumbai, August 28: According to reports, frogs and dinosaurs have co-existed on earth for a long time. However, the frogs, who are tiny creatures managed to survive the mass extinction when the dinosaurs were wiped out completely. As per research, the frog population that thrived to live after the extinction of the dinosaurs is no more. Wonder why?
According to several reports and research, the tiny creatures went through a low-level mass extinction when the dinosaurs were being wiped out. Recently, a mass grave was found in the Geiseltal region of central Germany with hundreds of frog fossils. Multiple reports suggest that the mass grave was found in the swampy coastlands of the Geiseltal region. Army of Amphibians! However, the news of a mass grave being found in the Geiseltal region has baffled scientists. According to a new study, the frogs died of exhaustion while mating. The frogs did not extinct like the dinosaurs but they died due to mating. Reports also suggest that the mating behavior of modern-day frogs and that of toads are similar to the ancient frog that dates back to at least 45 million years.
Besides, the researchers also found similar mass graves of frog fossils at other locations showing a similar resemblance to the one found at the Geiseltal mass grave. As per reports, the researchers also studied fossilized skeletons of frogs and also analysed their bones. Through the study, the researchers were able to know the reason for their death and also what happened to their skeletons after their death. The team of researchers also learned that most of the fossilized frogs had died in mass mortality events. So far, scientists thought that it was a drought situation that led to the killing of the frogs. However, the new study revealed that most of the Geiseltal frogs were actually toads. The team further noted that sex possibly can be a death trap for modern toads and frog species. It also said that some frogs might have frozen to death, died from diseases, or from old age.
