According to reports, the employee, Jovan Thomas, addressed the entire office in a reply-all email asking ‘what colour panties you have on.’ As per claims, Jovan Thomas is now taking legal action against the DA’s office for defamation. Jovan Thomas, the former victim advocate at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, was fired after sending the inappropriate email earlier this year. The Bay Area News Group has reported that Thomas filed a lawsuit against the city and the DA’s office regarding his firing. According to Jovan Thomas, he intended to send the playful message to cheer up an old college friend whose father had recently passed away. However, mistakenly, he sent the question, ‘what colour panties you have on,’ in a reply-all email, sending it to District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and her staff. He claims it was a genuine error. It has been reported that screenshots of the email were circulated widely on social media platforms. The original email, was titled ‘Event commemorating Matthew Shepard,’ which was sent to the entire office. In response, Thomas replied to everyone at the office with the question.’ Even though he had an explanation for the email, he was informed at the end of the day that he would no longer be working at the District Attorney’s office. He was informed that he was being laid off without disciplinary action and that he could reapply for a position in the office in the future. An official spokesperson from the DA’s office issued a statement clarifying that there was no relationship between Jovan Thomas, the man who had sent the email and the District Attorney. The statement added that the misogynistic behaviour violated the office’s code of conduct, and hence, Jovan Thomas had to be fired from his post. Now Jovan Thomas is suing the District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins, several employees, her office, and the city and county of San Francisco on multiple grounds, including defamation, infliction of severe emotional distress and invasion of privacy and labelling his behaviour as misogynistic. He claims that the DA’s office made fraudulent, humiliating and malicious statements about him in the media. According to claims, he is seeking an undisclosed and unspecified amount in damages.
