An actress from West Bengal died after being bitten by a snake in North 24 Parganas district of the state. Kalidasi Devi died after the snake which was used as a prop in a jatra (rural theatre) bit her during the show. The incident occurred at Barunhat village in Hasnabad police station area on Wednesday night. The 63-year-old every year participates in the play using a plastic snake, however, this time she decided to use two real snakes. Mondal was immediately rushed to a primary health centre but was declared dead on arrival.
However, Mondal's co-actress alleged that after the incident, an 'Ojha' (faith healer) tried to cure her, but failed. It is a common belief in various parts of the country that an 'Ojha' can cure a snake bite by using some herbs and chanting mantras. While no police complaint has been lodged in the incident, officials said that they are investigating it. Basirhat police district SP, S Rajkumar, confirmed the incident and said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The snake was used in the jatra as it was based on 'Manasamangal Kavya' which is the story of how snake goddess Manasa establishes her worship in Bengal. It is believed to be from the medieval era literature.
According to an India Today report, doctors at the hospital said that Mondal's life could have been saved if she received right medication on time. Following the incident, police detained members of the theatre troupe. The incident has raised questions if performing with live snakes are generally allowed. Generally, performers ensure that fangs of the snakes are removed before the show.
