India's obsession with the fair skin has been since time immemorial. The need to look fair has been called out and criticised by several people but the idea of fair skin is too thick to be washed away. But believing in something like rubbing stones or applying some stuff for a fairer skin are ridiculous ideas to even try out. A 5-year old child from Madhya Pradesh bore the brunt of his adopted mother's need to make him look fairer. The Child Line and Nishatpura police on Sunday learnt that the woman who adopted her from Uttrakhand believed that scrubbing his body with a black stone would make him look fair.

The child's elder sister could not see the torture the little one had to go through and thus called for help. The Child Line came to rescue of the child. The accused Sudha Tiwari is a government school teacher in the Nishatpura area. She had adopted the boy about one and half years back from Uttarakhand. The complainant Shobha Sharma was quoted to Times of India, “From the day child was brought to Bhopal, her aunt was unhappy with the boy’s complexion and she started treating him with various things. A year ago, after someone suggested her a treatment through a stone, she started scrubbing the child’s body with black stone. This left the kid badly bruised with scars and injuries on his wrist, shoulder, back and legs.”

The boy was rescued and sent to the Hamidia hospital for treatment. The complainant has alleged that the adoption center Matruchhaya, from where the child was adopted, did not keep any follow-up on the child. "I tried to stop Sudha several times, but when she did not stop harassing and torturing the kid, I had no other option except seeking help from Child Line and police," she said. Archana Sahay, Child Line director said, “When the child was rescued from his home, he was in a very bad shape. There were injury marks all over his body. Child was taken to hospital for treatment. He is now out of danger." A follow up on this case will be conducted soon.
