A family from Bhubaneshwar in Odisha rescued an Indian cobra and captured it laying eggs. The snake catcher rescued the cobra on April 27 and was going to release it in the wild, when he realised it had laid eggs in his bag. The snake laid 23 eggs of which the video is now viral on the internet.
The man informed the Odisha's Snake Helpline who told him not to release the snake but to bring it to their office so that it could comfortably lay eggs. The snake catcher then took the Cobra to their office according to the advice of Subhendu Mallik, the organisation's General Secretary.
According to an NDTV report, the cobra was placed in a well-ventilated plastic box, lined with newspaper where it could safely lay eggs. Mallik said that by the time, the Cobra was brought to their office, it had already laid eight eggs. He said that he filmed the scene as it is not a sight that conversationist or snake enthusiasts get to witness. It laid 23 eggs in total.
Here is the video:
The cobra was later released into the wild, while the eggs are being artificially incubated for up to 60 days. That is the time period taken for snake eggs to hatch. The hatchlings will be later released back into the wild. Indian cobra is one of the four venomous snake species found in the Indian subcontinent. It is protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
