Tilapia fish skin is becoming a popular option among doctors for skin reconstruction surgeries. But did you know that even a vagina could be made out of Tilapia fish skin? Evidently, it is possible. A 35-year-old Trans woman has become the first in the world to have a vagina made out of fish skin. Known as Maju, the woman, had reportedly had sex-reassignment surgery in 1999, but surgery didn't go very well and the situation got so worse that her genitals almost 'collapsed' due to excessive narrowing down, as per reports by Daily Mail. Her reconstruction surgery, done on her genitals included genital mould wrapped in tilapia skin and inserted to reconstruct her vagina. Maju reportedly underwent a sex-reassignment surgery in 1999 which didn't work out for her because of which she almost thought she would live a life of celibacy all her life. However, a surgeon in Fortaleza, north-east Brazil, helped her create a vagina for her, he has been known to make a vagina for women born without genitals. His therapy includes using a freshwater fish-Tilapia- skin membranes. Maju then underwent a neovaginoplasty on April 23 which included an incision on her vaginal area and then inserting a genital-shaped mould lined with tilapia skin.

The procedure works when the mould is absorbed by the body while accelerating the healing process. Surgeons even think she may be able to have sex in just a few months, as per Daily Mail.

Tilapia fish skin is known to be great for treating burns as well. A rich in a type of collagen that is very similar to the protein found in human skin is found in Tilapia skin which helps human skin to reconstruct faster.
